BBC Four World News features Rock Music Rock Art
Newbury, UK - 16th October 2008: Distant Object Productions today announced that excerpts from the film Rock Music Rock Art have been selected by BBC Four World News in a special feature broadcast as part of their regular news service.
Rock Music Rock Art follows a group of Ugandan and British musicians and artists as they make the perilous journey to a remote island on Lake Victoria to rediscover and re-awaken forgotten ancient rock gongs - some of the earliest instruments played by our ancestors. The documentary, commissioned by the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation, also questions whether the artistic and cultural collaboration that develops on the island can produce a new musical form by fusing traditional African with Western contemporary classical music.
Surrounded by outstanding lanscapes in bittersweet contrast to the poverty of the island's inhabitants, the artists are energised by the rock gongs themselves to create an inspirational cross-cultural fusion of two very different musical styles.
Using the stunning HD footage shot by Distant Object Productions, the BBC covers the adventurous journey and collaboration on Lolui island while also interviewing the Ugandan musicians currently in the UK for performances and reunions with the British artists as the project culminates with the opening celebrations of Kings Place in London.
